THE BRIEF LIFE AND MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF BORIS III KING OF BULGARIA

Origins Award for Outstanding New Work - Winner

VAULT Festival Origins Award - Winner

BBC Writers Room Popcorn New Writing Award - Runner Up

Direct from a sell out Edinburgh Fringe, this is the untold and true story of how Bulgaria saved almost 50,000 Jewish citizens during World War II and how the world forgot all about it. With live folk music, this 'Hamilton-esque' (The Stage) story follows a bunch of underdogs as they stand up to Hitler.

This is a unique story in 20th century European history. The show, featuring Bulgarian and Jewish folk tunes performed live by an extraordinary ensemble of actor musicians, explores the suspicious circumstances of the last King of Bulgaria's demise, how 50,000 Jewish Bulgarian people were saved from deportation and death, and how the world forgot all about it. Prepare to be enthralled as the cast weaves a tale that delves deep into history, leaving spectators both informed and spellbound.

This spectacular new show from multi-award-winning ensemble-based Out of the Forest Theatre company took the Edinburgh Fringe 2023 by storm, with a sell out run and a host of 4 & 5 star reviews. Out of the Forest take misremembered or forgotten stories from history, set them to folk music, and use them as a lens to better understand today. Irreverently presented, knee-slapping, historical theatre with a modern revisionist twist.

'Whether a jazz fan, a history buff or just someone who loves gripping real-life stories, this is a must see.' Kyril, Prince of Preslav, Boris III's Grandson

Supported by the Pleasance Theatre, Prince Kyril of Saxe-Coburg and Katharine Butler, The Production Exchange, Arts Council England, the BAAS award, The Bulgarian Embassy in London.

The Brief Life and Mysterious Death of Boris III, King of Bulgaria transfers to London's Arcola Theatre from September 2023. Please contact us for tickets.
